Open Call
Calling All Wanderers!
Project Overview
Good Girls Go to Heaven, Bad Girls Go Wandering is a collaborative zine project rooted in queer theory, alternative temporalities, and the material poetics of reproduction and decay.
This zine operates as a visual and textual chain letter. The zine starts out with a cover and five pages of my own work during my time in Indonesia—photographs, fragments, gestures toward the themes that drive my thesis: lives lived outside heteronormative timelines, bodies that wander off the beaten path, the precarities and possibilities of an unscripted life.
From there, the zine travels. Each artist adds five pages of their own work, then Xeroxes the entire collection before passing it to the next participant. Artists are invited not only to contribute original material but also to intervene in the pages that came before, to collage, annotate, draw over, or otherwise enter into dialogue with previous contributors.
With each round of copying, the work accumulates and degrades. Ghosts of earlier pages persist. Marks multiply. The zine becomes a material record of collaboration, wandering, and the beauty of what happens when work passes through many hands.
The final zine will be returned to me, documented, and shared as a limited edition publication. PDF backups of each round will be archived, preserving the process in its full, layered complexity.
This project is for artists based in Indonesia whose work engages with themes of queer experience, displacement, DIY culture, alternative lifeways, or the precarities of everyday life. All visual and textual mediums are welcome.
How It Works
1. You Receive the Package
You will receive a package containing:
-
The current version of the zine (a stack of Xeroxed pages)
-
Blank paper for your contributions
-
A pre-addressed mailer for sending to the next artist
-
This instruction sheet
2. You Create Your Pages
Add five pages of your own work. New and old work are accepted. Any medium is welcome:
-
Original photos
-
Drawings or illustrations
-
Poetry
-
Screenshots of text messages
-
Collage or mixed media
-
Handwritten notes
-
Found materials
-
Cryptic messages
-
Any visual or textual expression
Your work should respond, in some way, to the project's themes: wandering, queer temporality, life outside heteronormative frameworks, alternative spaces, and the precarities of everyday existence. There are no formal constraints—only that your voice joins the conversation.
3. You Intervene (Optional but Encouraged)
You may add to, collage over, annotate, or otherwise dialogue with the work of previous artists. This is not erasure—it is conversation. If you choose to intervene, consider leaving a small mark (initials or a symbol) to indicate your addition, though this is not required.
Please keep in mind of other artists that will go after you and allow for space for other artists to intervene as well.
The Xerox process will layer these interventions. The ghosts of what came before will remain.
4. You Xerox & Document Everything
Take all existing pages (the ones you received) plus our five new pages to the copier. Make one complete set of copies. This becomes the new master copy.
This step is essential. If any material is lost or damaged during transit, the complete set of Xeroxed pages ensures that the next artist can reprint what is needed and the project can continue without interruption.
Before sending the zine onward:
-
Scan each page at 300dpi (minimum)
-
Email all scanned pages to: info@badgirlsgowandering.com
The degradation—the shifting contrast, the accumulation of marks, the way earlier pages ghost through—is intentional. It is part of the work. The documentation ensures the process is preserved even if the physical zine is delayed or lost.
5. You Pass It On
Place the new master zine and all other material that was received back into the box and mail it to the next address provided.
*Note: Pre-addressed packaging labels will be provided within the package—no need to calculate postage.
Timeline
You will have one week from the day you receive the package to complete your spread. Upon receipt, please confirm via email or text within 24 hours.
By the final day, you should have Xeroxed the complete collection, scanned and emailed all pages. You will then ship the package to the next artist using the pre-addressed mailer provided, and confirm shipment with tracking information.
*Note: If shipping delays or other circumstances require more time, please communicate as early as possible.
